Brief History
- USS S-18 (SS-123) was an S‑class U.S. Navy submarine built in the immediate post‑World War I era and commissioned in the early 1920s.
 - During the 1930s, S‑class boats like S‑18 were primarily used for training, fleet exercises, coastal patrols and showing the flag on extended cruises — often operating from Atlantic or Pacific bases and, in some cases, with elements of the Asiatic Fleet.
 - By the 1930s they were increasingly obsolete compared with newer fleet submarines but remained valuable for development of submarine tactics and crew training through the interwar years.
