Brief History
LCI(G)-455 was one of the WWII-era Landing Craft Infantry (Large) hulls converted into the gunboat role. LCIs were built beginning in 1942 as shallow-draft, beachable transports for assaulting infantry; many were later fitted with extra guns, rocket launchers and close-in fire control and reclassified LCI(G) to provide direct fire support during amphibious landings.
- LCI(G) vessels served mainly in the Pacific and Mediterranean theaters, supporting assaults on defended beaches, suppressing shore batteries, and providing convoy/escort and patrol duties.
- LCI(G)-455 would have been built and commissioned in the mid-1940s and employed in support roles rather than as a troop carrier.
