Brief History
The U.S.S. Panay (PG-45) was a U.S. Navy river gunboat stationed on the Yangtze River in China to protect American interests during the turbulent 1930s. On December 12, 1937, while evacuating U.S. embassy personnel from Nanking, the Panay was attacked and sunk by Japanese aircraft. Despite clear U.S. markings, the attack killed several crew and civilians, and injured many more. The incident caused international outrage and strained U.S.–Japanese relations prior to World War II. The Panay’s legacy endures as a symbol of courage and diplomacy under fire.
