About the Taigei‑Class (SS‑513 Series)
The Taigei‑class represents Japan’s newest generation of diesel‑electric attack submarines, introduced in the early 2020s to advance underwater performance and stealth. Built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Kawasaki Heavy Industries as a successor to the Sōryū class, the first unit, JS Taigei (SS‑513), was laid down in 2017 and commissioned in 2022.
Notable upgrades include lithium‑ion batteries for longer submerged endurance, modernized sonar and combat systems, and advanced noise‑reduction measures. With a displacement of roughly 3,000 tons and accommodations for a crew of around 70, the class offers improved automation, living conditions, and modular construction for future upgrades — reinforcing Japan’s undersea defense capabilities in the Indo‑Pacific.
