Brief History
Akagi served as a flagship of the Imperial Japanese Navy’s carrier fleet in the early years of World War II. Laid down originally as a battlecruiser and converted into an aircraft carrier, she was commissioned in 1927 and later modernized with a full-length flight deck. Akagi played a central role in early Pacific campaigns before being lost at the Battle of Midway in June 1942 — a turning point in naval history.
