Historical Inspiration
The real Vittorio Veneto (Pennant No. 550) was one of the Regia Marina’s most powerful battleships. Launched in the late 1930s as the second ship of the Littorio class, she was named for Italy’s decisive 1918 victory at the Battle of Vittorio Veneto. Commissioned in 1940, Vittorio Veneto combined formidable firepower — nine 381 mm (15‑inch) guns — with remarkable speed, exceeding 30 knots. She participated in major Mediterranean actions, including Cape Spartivento and Cape Matapan, and served as a fleet flagship throughout the war. Following Italy’s 1943 armistice she was interned by the Allies and later decommissioned and scrapped in the early 1950s.
