Brief History (Summary)
- USS Ward (DD-139) was a Wickes‑class destroyer built for World War I and commissioned in 1918. She spent interwar periods in reserve and was recommissioned as tensions rose before World War II.
- On 7 December 1941 Ward engaged and sank a Japanese midget submarine outside Pearl Harbor — widely cited as the first American shots fired in WWII.
- During WWII she served in convoy escort, patrol, and amphibious‑support roles after conversion to a high‑speed transport/escort, supporting landing operations and convoy protection in the Pacific.
Approximate Model Length (1/350 scale)
The Wickes‑class overall length is approximately 314 ft (314 ft 4 in). At 1/350 scale the model measures roughly 10.8 inches (≈27.4 cm) long (rounded to the nearest tenth).
