Model History
USS South Dakota (ACR-9) was an early 20th-century United States armored cruiser, laid down and launched around 1906. Built for long-range scouting, commerce protection, and showing the flag, she operated on both American coasts and in Caribbean and Latin American waters during the pre-war years. During World War I she performed convoy escort and transport duties and served as a squadron flagship at times. In the postwar period she was reclassified and renamed Huron to free the South Dakota name for newer ships; she subsequently served in secondary and training roles and was decommissioned and disposed of in the early 1920s.
