Historical Background
USS S-34 (SS-139) was one of the U.S. Navy’s World War I–era S‑class submarines. Boats of that class were built in the early 1920s and spent the interwar years on training, fleet exercises and forward patrols—primarily in the Pacific and Asiatic waters. When World War II began many S‑class boats were pressed into wartime service on patrol and reconnaissance missions in forward areas (Aleutians, Philippines and surrounding waters). Surviving boats were later relegated to training and secondary duties and were decommissioned and disposed of shortly after the war.
