Brief History
USS Puritan (BM-1) was a late-19th‑century U.S. Navy monitor completed around 1898 as part of the Navy’s coastal‑defense modernization. Built with heavy armor and large turreted guns on a low‑freeboard hull, she was intended for harbor and coastal defense during the Spanish–American War era and saw limited blue‑water service.
Like many monitors of the period, Puritan spent much of her career in reserve or local defense roles and was ultimately decommissioned and disposed of in the early 20th century.
