Brief History
USS Newport (LST-1179) was the lead ship of the Newport‑class tank landing ships, a late‑Cold War redesign of the traditional WWII‑style LST that replaced bow doors with a long hinged bow ramp supported by distinctive derrick arms. Laid down in the late 1960s and commissioned around 1969, Newport and her sister ships were used for amphibious assault, vehicle and cargo lift, logistics support and training through the 1970s and 1980s. The class saw service worldwide on deployments, exercises and humanitarian missions; Newport herself remained active through the 1980s and was retired in the early 1990s.
Approximate Model Length (1/350 scale)
The real Newport's overall length is approximately 522 feet. At 1/350 scale this kit represents an overall model length of about 17.9 inches (≈ 455 mm) (rounded to the nearest tenth).
