    History

    USS Laffey (DD-724) was an Allen M. Sumner–class destroyer named for Civil War seaman Bartlett Laffey. Commissioned in the mid‑1940s, Sumner‑class destroyers like Laffey served in the Pacific during late World War II and later performed routine Cold War duties such as escorts, patrols, training, and fleet exercises. In 1968 Laffey received a FRAM II modernization to update anti‑submarine sensors and weapons and extend her service life; she continued to serve into the Vietnam/Cold War era before eventual decommissioning.
