Brief History
USS Katahdin was an experimental late‑19th century U.S. Navy armored ram built for harbor defense. Launched in the 1890s with a very low freeboard and a heavily reinforced, pointed bow, she was intended to smash and sink enemy ships by ramming rather than by prolonged gun action. Built as a specialist coastal-defense vessel, Katahdin had limited seakeeping and was quickly made obsolete by advances in naval gunnery and torpedo craft. She spent most of her career in local defense and reserve roles, was decommissioned in the early 20th century, and eventually disposed of when newer types supplanted the ram concept.
