Brief History
USS Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. (DD-850) was a Gearing-class destroyer commissioned just after World War II and named for Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. She served during the early Cold War period, participating in 1950s fleet operations, escort and patrol duties, and deployments related to the Korean War and NATO/Mediterranean commitments. Like many Gearing-class ships, she received mid‑Cold War ASW modernizations (FRAM-style upgrades) to extend service life and anti-submarine capability, remaining active into the 1960s–1970s before being retired or transferred as the class was phased out.
