History & Service Summary — U.S.S. Jenkins (DDE-447)
This kit represents a Fletcher-class destroyer after a 1950s FRAM conversion. Typical service history for a FRAM-converted Fletcher like Jenkins:
- Built and commissioned during World War II as a fast, multi-role escort used for screening, anti-submarine warfare (ASW), shore bombardment, and fleet operations—Fletcher-class destroyers saw extensive service in the Pacific.
- Retained or reactivated for Cold War service and redesignated DDE as emphasis shifted to ASW and escort duties.
- Underwent FRAM modernization in the late 1950s to extend service life and improve ASW capability: updated sonar and radar, added modern ASW weapons (ASROC or similar), DASH/helipad capability or equivalent small-helicopter support, revised superstructure and armament layout, and updated engineering systems.
- Served through the 1950s–1960s on ASW patrols, NATO/allied exercises and potential Vietnam-era deployments, before eventual decommissioning, disposal, or transfer to a foreign navy.
Approximate model length (1/350 scale)
Fletcher-class overall length ≈ 376.5 ft. At 1/350 scale this equals roughly 12.9 inches (≈32.8 cm). Actual resin kit length may vary slightly depending on how bow/stern details and FRAM additions are modeled.
