Brief History
USS Houston (CA-30) was a Northampton‑class heavy cruiser commissioned in 1930. She served with the Asiatic Fleet and later operated in the Dutch East Indies area as tensions with Japan grew. In late 1941–early 1942 Houston saw heavy action during the opening months of the Pacific War, participating in attempts to interdict Japanese advances and escort duties with Allied forces. On the night of 28 February 1942, while attempting to escape through the Sunda Strait, Houston and the Australian cruiser HMAS Perth were surprised and overwhelmed by a large Japanese force; both ships were sunk. Many of Houston’s crew were killed in the action or later died as prisoners of war. The ship is remembered for her valiant but costly service in the early Pacific campaign.
