Brief History
USS Evarts (DE-5) was the lead ship of the Evarts-class short-hull destroyer escorts built for World War II. The compact, mass-produced Evarts-class served primarily as antisubmarine (ASW) escorts for convoy protection and patrols. Commissioned in 1943, Evarts and her sister ships spent the war escorting convoys, conducting antisubmarine patrols, and screening larger vessels—duties that helped safeguard Allied shipping lanes. Like many wartime escorts, she was decommissioned soon after hostilities ended and was disposed of in the immediate postwar period.
