USS Charleston (PG-51) — brief history
USS Charleston was one of the Erie‑class patrol gunboats built in the interwar period as compact, multi‑role ships for overseas patrol, convoy escort, and presence missions. By 1943 she was serving as a wartime patrol/escort vessel, performing coastal and convoy escort, patrol, and other auxiliary duties typical of gunboats of that class during World War II. Erie‑class ships were designed for long endurance and seakeeping for colonial station work and wartime escort; individual careers varied but most were employed in convoy/anti‑submarine patrols, escorting shipping, and local naval support through the war. Charleston was decommissioned after the wartime emergency ended and removed from active service in the postwar drawdown.
