Historical Background
USS Bainbridge (DD-1) — the U.S. Navy’s first destroyer and lead ship of the Bainbridge class, named for Commodore William Bainbridge — was built around the turn of the 20th century (laid down c. 1899, launched 1901, commissioned in the early 1900s). She served with the Atlantic Fleet on patrol, training and Caribbean duties, and carried out escort and patrol work during World War I. Bainbridge was decommissioned shortly after the war and disposed of around 1919–1920.
