Brief History
USS Atlanta (CL‑51) was the lead ship of the Atlanta-class anti-aircraft light cruisers built for the U.S. Navy. Designed around numerous dual-purpose 5/38 guns, Atlantas were optimized to provide close-in anti-aircraft protection for carrier task forces and amphibious operations.
Atlanta entered service in the early years of World War II and served primarily in the Pacific, escorting carriers and supporting operations such as Guadalcanal. During the night actions of the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal (mid-November 1942), Atlanta was heavily damaged in close combat and by combined friendly and enemy fire and torpedoes, and was lost in November 1942 with significant casualties.
