    Brief history

    USS Amphitrite (BM-2) was the lead ship of the Amphitrite‑class monitors built for the U.S. Navy in the post–Civil War period. Completed in the 1870s and modernized in the 1890s, Amphitrite and her sisters were low‑freeboard, turreted coastal defense ships intended to guard harbors and anchorages.

    She was reactivated for service during the Spanish–American War (1898) for harbor defense and coastal operations, after which she returned to reserve status and was gradually phased out of front‑line service in the early 20th century. Like many monitors of her era, she spent most of her career as a defensive asset rather than a blue‑water cruiser and was eventually decommissioned as newer designs replaced her role.

    The typical full‑size length overall for USS Amphitrite is about 261 ft (≈3,138 in). At 1/350 scale that works out to roughly 9.0 inches long (rounded to the nearest tenth).
