Brief History
- USS Ainsworth (FF-1090) is a Knox‑class frigate — a Cold War–era ASW escort built for the U.S. Navy.
- Knox‑class ships were designed around a single screw and a large sonar/ASW fit (ASROC launcher, torpedo tubes) and carried a helicopter facility (originally DASH, later manned LAMPS helicopters).
- Ships of this class were laid down and commissioned in the late 1960s–early 1970s, were reclassified from DE to FF in 1975, and served through the 1970s–1980s on Atlantic and Pacific deployments tracking Soviet submarines and performing fleet escort, patrol, and training duties.
- Most Knox‑class frigates were decommissioned or transferred to foreign navies in the late 1980s–1990s.
