Brief History
YO / YOG / YW barges were U.S. Navy yard barges used to store and transfer fuel and fresh water in naval yards, anchorages, and remote bases. YO denotes fuel oil barges, YOG indicates gasoline/oil barges (generally for gasoline or other volatile fuels), and YW denotes water barges. These were typically non‑self‑propelled or lightly powered steel vessels built in large numbers from World War II into the Cold War era. They carried tanks, pumping and hose gear on deck, small service or engine spaces, and either a minimal crew or were towed by tugs.
Their role was logistical: acting as floating tank farms, refueling ships alongside in harbor, and supplying shore facilities and remote stations. After wartime service many were laid up, sold into civilian service, converted for alternate uses, or scrapped; a number were reclassified or retained in auxiliary service through the mid‑20th century. YOs/YOGs/YWs were typically identified by hull numbers rather than formal names and varied in size depending on their specific design and cargo type.
Approximate 1/350 Model Length
Full‑size yard barges varied in length, typically between roughly 100 and 200 feet depending on type. Below are representative model lengths at 1/350 scale (rounded to the nearest tenth):
- 100 ft full size → ~3.4 in (1/350)
- 150 ft full size → ~5.1 in (1/350) — a common representative example
- 200 ft full size → ~6.9 in (1/350)
If you can provide the specific hull number or the full‑size length of the particular barge this kit represents, we can supply a more exact model length.
