Brief History
DKM Hilfskreuzer Atlantis was a German commerce raider that operated early in World War II. Disguised as a merchantman and supported by supply ships, she roamed the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans attacking and capturing Allied merchant shipping. Commanded by Kapitän Bernhard Rogge, Atlantis had a successful raiding career, taking or sinking more than twenty ships and disrupting Allied trade before being located by the Royal Navy. She was intercepted by HMS Devonshire and scuttled on 22 November 1941; most of her crew were taken prisoner. Rogge earned a reputation for disciplined command and reasonably humane treatment of prisoners.
