Product Overview & Model History
A few months ago we received test castings of the forthcoming 143’ US Navy Auxiliary Fleet Tug / Ocean Rescue Tug (ATA/ATR) kit. The initial package contained a pair of tug hulls and packets of small resin parts. After consulting reference photos (including Navsource) and additional research, it was clear these tugs served in wartime towing, salvage and rescue roles and many later entered civilian service.
One notable example is ATR-47, shown in a Measure 22 wartime scheme. Post‑war, that vessel was sold to Moran Towing and modified for civilian service as the Edmund H. Moran II. The test builds were assembled to represent both wartime and post‑war (Moran) liveries — the ATR with gun tub and ammo locker, and the Moran version with appropriate modifications. Photo‑etch detail was added from spare sets prior to the dedicated photo‑etch release.
These kits build into tidy, robust models suitable for tug or auxiliary fleet displays. Please note: model kit does not come with a display stand.
Brief ATA-class History (generic)
- ATA was the US Navy classification for oceangoing auxiliary tugs built mainly during World War II.
- These tugs performed towing, salvage, rescue, and escort support, often operating in forward areas to tow damaged ships to safety.
- They were lightly armed for self‑defense, carried robust towing gear and tankage for long runs, and many entered post‑war naval, coast guard, or civilian service.
Model length at 1/350 scale
Use this formula to estimate model length:
Model length (in inches) = (Ship length in feet × 12) ÷ 350
Typical ATA-type lengths and their approximate 1/350 model sizes (rounded):
- 143 ft ship → (143 × 12) ÷ 350 ≈ 4.9 inches
- 205 ft ship → (205 × 12) ÷ 350 ≈ 7.0 inches
The kit test castings were based on a 143′ ATA/ATR design, which corresponds to roughly 4.9″ long at 1/350 scale. If you provide a specific hull number or full ship name, we can calculate a more precise model length and include vessel‑specific history.
NOTICE: Model Kit Does Not Come with Display Stand
