History of INS Kalvari (S21)
INS Kalvari (S21) is the lead vessel of India’s Kalvari-class diesel-electric attack submarines, based on the French Scorpène design by Naval Group and constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) under India’s “Make in India” initiative. Launched in 2015 and commissioned on 14 December 2017, Kalvari introduced advanced stealth technologies and precision weapon systems to enhance India’s undersea capabilities. Designed for extended submerged operations and operational reach in the Indian Ocean Region, the Kalvari-class represents a significant step in modernizing India’s submarine fleet.
