History
The Rubis (S601) was the lead ship of the Rubis-class, French’s first generation of nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSNs). Laid down in 1976 and commissioned in 1983, Rubis marked a major step in French naval autonomy, replacing earlier diesel-electric models with nuclear propulsion for extended underwater endurance and global reach. Compact compared to other SSNs like the U.S. Los Angeles-class, the Rubis was designed for versatility — including anti-submarine warfare (ASW), intelligence gathering, and escort missions for the French Navy’s strategic assets. Despite its smaller size, the class featured advanced sonar, torpedoes, and high maneuverability suited for operations in both the Atlantic and Mediterranean. Rubis underwent a major modernization in the 1990s to align with the capabilities of later vessels in the class (Améthyste standard), improving her stealth and detection technologies.
