Historical Inspiration
The Brazil Riachuelo Submarine (S40) is part of Brazil’s modern Riachuelo-class fleet, based on the French Scorpène-class design and developed under the PROSUB program. Constructed domestically by Itaguaí Construções Navais (ICN) with technology transfer from France, the program modernizes Brazil’s fleet and supports future submarine capabilities.
The first unit, S40, was launched in 2018 and commissioned in 2022. Featuring a larger hull than the original Scorpène design, it displaces approximately 2,000 tons submerged and is equipped for stealthy, long-range patrols with advanced sonar, torpedoes, and anti-ship missiles. Four submarines are planned in total, including Humaitá, Tonelero, and Angostura — together representing a major step in Brazil’s naval self-reliance and strategic presence in the South Atlantic.
